This is the retaining black located inside the main housing on the Warn M8274 Hi Mount Winch.
The cutout inside the plate is for the brake shaft to go through.
Not having this plate in your winch will cause the brake shaft to float around possibly causing extensive gear damage or a broken brake shaft.
