Located on the front of the timing cover, the vacuum pump on the ZD30 Direct Injection (DI) engine is critical for safe vehicle operation. Its primary job is to create vacuum for the brake booster, which provides power assistance to your braking system. These pumps commonly fail by leaking engine oil or by no longer generating enough vacuum.
A leaking pump will make a mess of your engine bay and chassis, but a complete failure is a major safety concern. Without sufficient vacuum, you will lose all brake assistance. This results in an extremely hard brake pedal and significantly increased stopping distances, which could be catastrophic in an emergency.
