This oil cooler assembly is located on the side of the engine block and houses the 2 oil filters. Its primary function is to use the engine's coolant to regulate and reduce the temperature of the engine oil. For a 4x4 owner with the legendary TD42 engine, maintaining optimal oil temperature is critical for engine longevity, especially under heavy-load conditions like towing, low-range crawling, or climbing steep inclines. Over time, the internal seals can perish or the unit can develop cracks, leading to failure and requiring a complete replacement to protect your engine.
The risk: Ignoring a faulty oil cooler can have catastrophic consequences. A common failure is an internal breach, causing coolant and oil to mix. Coolant in your oil drastically reduces its lubricating properties, leading to premature bearing wear and potentially a complete engine seizure. Oil in your cooling system can degrade rubber hoses and clog the radiator, leading to severe overheating. Either failure can leave you stranded and facing a very expensive engine rebuild.
