This is the engine's cooling fan, located directly behind the radiator. It bolts to the viscous fan hub and is crucial for pulling air through the radiator core to keep your TD42 engine at the right operating temperature. The original plastic blades become brittle from constant heat cycles under the bonnet. Cracks can form, leading to a blade breaking off, especially at high RPM.
If a fan blade breaks, it can cause significant damage. At speed, the broken piece can puncture your radiator, destroy the fan shroud, and damage belts and hoses. A damaged or inefficient fan also means less air is pulled through the radiator, which will lead to your engine overheating and potentially causing major engine failure.
