The clutch master cylinder converts the physical pressure from your foot on the clutch pedal into hydraulic pressure. This pressure is then used to engage the clutch slave cylinder, which disengages the clutch, allowing you to change gears. This leads to a loss of pressure and symptoms like a soft, spongy clutch pedal, difficulty shifting gears, or the pedal sinking to the floor.
