This Nut goes onto the diff housing stud on the front or rear of the vehicle that the diff carrier goes onto so it can be bolted to the housing.

Re-using an old, stretched, or damaged nut is asking for trouble. If it backs off, the inside of your diff center becomes separated from the main housing allowing your diff oil to leak out and also allowing water to get in
