This is the seal that is located on the inner side of the rear wheel bearing cage housing. There is also two shims that are located between this seal and the diff housing assembly. You may need to replace this seal if you notice signs of an oil leak around the inside of the rear wheel or on the brake backing plate. Over time, the rubber can perish, harden, or be damaged by worn bearings, causing a loss of sealing integrity.
If a leaking axle seal is ignored, the escaping gear oil will saturate the rear brake shoes, severely compromising their effectiveness and leading to a dangerous reduction in braking performance. This can also cause a loss of differential fluid, leading to premature wear and potential failure of the wheel bearings and differential components, resulting in a costly repair.
