This is the Brake Master Cylinder, which you'll find bolted to the brake booster on the driver's side firewall of your rig. It's the core component that turns the force from your foot on the brake pedal into the hydraulic pressure needed to actually stop your vehicle.
If your brake pedal feels spongy or sinks to the floor, it's a dead giveaway that the internal seals in your master cylinder have had it. A failing master cylinder can't build or hold pressure, which means your brakes won't work when you need them most.
As all these cylinders have an aluminum bore, we have found by this time they have worn beyond repair, and it is most efficient to replace the whole cylinder.
