This seal is located on the lid of the air filter box in your Y61 GU Patrol. The original factory seal becomes hard and flattened with age and repeated heat cycles under the bonnet. When this happens, it can no longer create an effective seal, allowing fine dust and contaminants to bypass the air filter and enter your engine's intake system.
Allowing unfiltered air into your diesel engine can cause catastrophic damage. Dust particles can damage turbocharger compressor wheels, coat Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor elements leading to incorrect readings, and cause accelerated wear on cylinder bores and pistons. Replacing a failed seal is cheap insurance against very expensive engine repairs.
