This viscous fan hub is fitted to the front of the water pump, and the engine cooling fan bolts directly to it. The hub's job is to control the speed of the fan based on engine temperature. The internal silicone fluid can break down or leak from the unit, causing it to fail. A failed hub can either seize and run the fan constantly, which is noisy and saps power, or it can freewheel and not engage at all. If the fan fails to engage, it won't pull enough air through the radiator, which will cause your engine to overheat, especially under load or at low speeds. Engine overheating can lead to serious and expensive damage.
