This needle roller bearing is located inside the spindle (or stub axle) on the front axle of your Nissan Patrol. It provides critical support for the outer CV axle shaft, allowing it to spin smoothly and concentrically within the swivel hub assembly.
Over time, exposure to water, mud, and general wear and tear can cause the original bearing to fail. This is often accelerated by worn axle seals that allow contaminants in and grease out. A worn bearing will cause excessive play in the CV shaft, leading to vibrations, steering irregularities, and a distinct grinding or clicking noise, particularly when turning.
If left unaddressed, a collapsed stub axle bearing can cause catastrophic damage to the CV joint and the spindle itself. In a worst-case scenario, this failure can lead to the CV shaft breaking, resulting in a loss of drive and potentially causing the wheel to lock up or detach from the vehicle, creating an extremely dangerous situation on or off the road.
