Located inside your rear differential housing, the crown wheel and pinion gears are responsible for transferring drive from the tailshaft to your axles. These gears are a common wear item and can become noisy or fail completely, especially in a 4x4 that works hard. You may also need to change your diff ratio if you have fitted larger tyres to your Patrol, as this will restore lost performance and correct your speedometer. A worn or damaged gear set will cause a whining or grinding noise from the rear of the vehicle, and if left unchecked, can fail entirely, leaving you stranded with no drive.
