This CV joint and axle shaft assembly is located in the front axle housing, connecting the front differential to the driver side wheel hub. The most common failure is a split rubber boot, which lets grease out and contaminants like water and dirt in. This quickly destroys the joint, resulting in a distinct 'clicking' or 'popping' sound, especially when turning on full lock.
